Welcome to Tlatelolco!
As a homage to one of Mexico City's most historical boroughs, we bring you a multicolor version of the Square of 3 Cultures, where Aztec, Spanish Colonial, and Modern architecture coexist.
The oldest structures are part of the ceremonial centre of the Mexica (Aztec) city of Tlatelolco, twin and neighbor city of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Empire. The Templo Mayor and it's expansion phases are still visible in front of the church.
The next phase is the Church of Santiago Tlatelolco and the Convent of the Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco. These were built in the 16th century reusing many of the stones from the Mexica buildings and clearly over the ceremonial centre to replace the ancient cult with Catholicism.
Lastly, The 3 apartment buildings are part of a much larger complex spanning 3 mega-blocks with more than 100 housing units built in the 1960's, in an effort leaded by Mexican architect Mario Pani.
This square was also the setting of a tragic event in Mexico's history when in October 2, 1968, a student demonstration was violently shut down by the government, with countless dead, missing, or injured. A memorial slab commemorates this event.
Also, several buildings collapsed or were damaged during the 1985 earthquake, marking yet another tragedy to the location (from Wikipedia).
