This unusual type of Portuguese devotional image was sculptred for the cult of Our Lady of the Rosary associating it with the cult of the Virgin of the IMmaculate Conception through the inclusion of the lunar crescent on its base, a combination that was spread by the Dominican preachers. The rosary, which signifies a crown of roses, is materialised in a mandoria of twnty-four roses and in the rose presented by the Virgin. The dense volumes, the type of folds in the garments and the delineation of the faces, all point to the mastery of Diogo Pires-o-Velho in the Virgin and Child at the church of Leca da Palmeira, which resulted from a royal commission placed by Dom Afonso V, in 1481.
