This bell almost certainly dates from the twelfth century, but in the second half of the fourteenth century the Scaligeri renovated the tower, typical of fortress-houses of the Middle-Ages: this was the first clock tower with a bell in Verona.

After the restorations to the clock tower this bell was inserted in 1379, the admirable work of Maestro Jacobo, a popular bronze smelter at the time. Engraved on the bell is the relief of the Scala family coat of arms, the image of a fisherman from San Zeno and inscriptions in Gothic characters. The bell is now kept in Castelvecchio.
