This model is a male hippopotamus; male hippopotamuses are generally larger and more heavily built than females. Males fight spectacular battles in water. Roaring loudly, they ram their open jaws at each other and clash their huge canines- sometimes inflicting deep wounds. Hippopotamuses have been known to take on crocodiles and sharks. They deposit large quantities of extrement in water. this 'fertilizer' is vital for the growth of water plants- the food of other animals.
This model can be found at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington, London
