Description
This is a fragment of an archway that lines the pulpit in the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, Milan. The pulpit was created between the 9th-12th Century and is believes to symbolize the evangelists John and Matthew, although the large eagle could also symbolize resurrection.
The pulpit surrounds the Sarcophagus of Stilicho, an early Christian masterpiece featuring bas-reliefs that decorate its walls. The sarcophagus depicts Jesus and the doctors of the Church (or apostles), Elijah and the Fiery Chariot, Adam and Eve, Noah and Moses.
