Picturesque Liberty Cap towers over the Merced river beside Yosemite's Mist trail. Despite its proximity to one of the park's most popular trails few people climb Liberty Cap, and most hikers don't even know its name. Nearby Half Dome steals all the thunder. Half Dome is probably climbed more times every day in the summer than Liberty Cap is climbed in most years. And this despite the fact that Liberty Cap has a much shorter approach and much more adventurous climbing (although the easiest route is still non technical). Liberty Cap requires no lottery, no permit, no waiting in lines. Liberty Cap offers something you can seldom find in Yosemite, and never on Half Dome. . . Solitude. Wait, why did I just tell you all this? Forget you heard anything. Rule#1 about Liberty Cap is you don't talk about Liberty Cap.
